Class of '11 T-shirt Sale!

To kick off fundraising for our class this year, we will be selling Class of 2011 t-shirts. The shirts are available for $11 each and they are grey with "3L" printed on the upper front chest and "Class of 2011" on the back.

The t-shirts are being sold in conjunction with the Class of 2011 Legacy Fund and the money raised from the sales will directly benefit our class. A portion of the money will go into our class budget to provide funding for any events we hold this year (including the Well Party), and the rest will go towards our class gift to the school at graduation. You also have the option of making your donation of $20.11 to the Legacy Fund, and you will get a t-shirt too!

We're 3Ls now and we can show this off with pride. Stop by the SBA office to check out these sweet shirts. We currently have shirts available in the following sizes: S, M, L, XL, and XXL.

2010 Law Prom

Law Prom is fast approaching and we are all very excited about the event! We have retained DJ Dread to entertain us once again and he has asked that we provide him with some tunes we would like to hear throughout the night. Please post song suggestions here or on our FB wall and we will forward them to the DJ.

LAW PROM

The LAW PROM will take place on Friday April 9th, 2010 from 8-11pm. The cost of the Law Prom is $35 per person, which includes food and drinks. The event is formal attire (but make sure you’re comfortable enough to dance to your favorite tunes).

Tickets will be sold Monday March 8, 2010 through Friday March 12, 2010 in the SBA OFFICE beginning at 9am until 5pm.

TICKET SALES INSTRUCTIONS:

Monday March 8: Tickets will ONLY be sold to Albany Law Students. The limit on Monday is one ticket per student. This is being done to give ticket preference to Albany Law Students.

Tuesday March 9 - Friday March 12: Tickets available for both Albany Law Students and non-Albany law guests.

Students are limited to two (2) tickets provided one is for their own use. There are no exchanges permitted. Entrance will be based on a guest list. All students who plan on bringing a non-Albany Law Student guest must either provide a name for their guest or if no name is provided, the guest must be accompanied by that Albany Law Student to gain entrance into the State Room.

Must be 21 to attend; Valid ID required at door.

I am pleased to share Reunion Weekend is fast approaching and I invite you to participate in our activities taking place on October 16-18, 2009 and assist me by encouraging your classmates to volunteer as well.

Volunteering during reunion is fun! It also provides numerous opportunities to speak directly with Albany Law alumni. I must share, several students gained internships, summer and post graduate positions because of reunion volunteering/networking last year and I envision the same for this year. We are expecting alumni attendance to be the highest ever! I have outlined the numerous available student volunteer roles below.

We will be holding two Volunteer Information (PIZZA) Sessions in Room W120 prior to reunion: Tues., Oct 13 from 4:15-5:15 p.m. and Wed., Oct 14 from 11:45 a.m to 12:45 p.m. You will receive your volunteer long-sleeve t-shirt and a complimentary ticket to attend the picnic at that time as well as additional instructions for the specific activities. You are welcome to volunteer for more than one event.

Course assignments will be given during Volunteer Info Session(s) - week of Oct. 12th
Course maps are available now and will be handed out during Info Sessions and on Saturday morning as well.
Encourage runners/walkers and help guide participants on course.
Race begins at 9:00 a.m., prizes to top 3 male and female finishers.
Walkers are expected to complete course in 45-60 minutes.
Once designated ‘last walker’ passes your position you are free to go. Continental breakfast will be served in the East Foyer.

As the Editor in Chief of the Albany Law School 2010 Yearbook I'm committed to making our yearbook as great as possible, and the only way to do so is to organize a committee with a few of you wonderful folks. By properly organizing the yearbook responsibilities we can severely limit the workload for each committee member. The areas that need to be covered are photo taking and uploading, creating advertising information for families and businesses, and designing the finished product with a software program that's very easy to use. All of the aforementioned duties can be further broken down. Hey Everyone

We have already started to plan some great events for this semester. The budget meeting will be taking place on Sunday, September 13th and after that we will know exactly how much funding we will have for each tentative event.

We have some great fundraising ideas that involve apparel with a special twist. We will, of course, be throwing the annual Halloween party and are looking for ideas so we can make it even better than last years! We will also be organizing a pro bono event, focusing on tenants rights. These are just a few of the things to look forward to for this semester. Be sure to check back, as we will be periodically posting updates and information on the blog!

CONSTITUTION VOTE

The new constitution has passed. This has a variety of implications for the general population of students (now referred to as the Student Bar Association to which everyone is a member) and the Student Bar Association Senate (the group of elected member such as myself and the other 2L class representatives).

A major change is the number of representatives each class has on the Senate. With the old constitution, we had one President and three Representatives. The new constitution allows one President and four Representatives. Thus, we must elect another rep!

If anyone is interested in running for this representative position, please CLICK HERE for the petition.

Because of the need to get a budget out to all campus groups, the time line for this election is very aggressive. All petitions must be put in the ballot box outside the library no later than 4:00pm on TUESDAY, September 8, 2009.

The election will occur WEDNESDAY, September 9 from 9:00am -- 4:00pm.

The following information lays out what each group needs know and do before, during and after the SBA Budget Meeting, which will take place on Sunday, September 13 at 10:00AM in Room 200.

If you have any questions, concerns, or need help creating your budget proposal, please do not hesitate to contact me (ysiganur@albanylaw.edu). I look forward to an eventful and fun semester!

BEFORE THE MEETING

· A sign-up list will be made available outside the SBA office on Friday, September 4 by 10:00AM. The time slots are on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to sign up early for an optimal time.

· All budget proposals must be submitted by Wednesday, September 9 by 5:00PM to my mailbox (Yana Siganur, Class of 2010). No exceptions.

· Guidelines for preparing a budget proposal, extra copies of budget proposal forms (cover sheets and individual event proposals) are attached to this email and are available on the SBA’s website, www.albanylawsba.wordpress.com.

· If your group has not yet been recognized as an organization by the SBA, you should still sign up for a time slot and submit a budget proposal. The SBA will determine your recognition status on the spot with your charter and by-laws.

· When planning and itemizing your events, please keep in mind that Albany Law School does not reimburse taxes. Tax exempt forms, which are to be submitted to vendors, are available for pick-up at the Business Office and are only available to the President and Treasurer of each organization.

BUDGET PROPOSAL FORMS

· Each event must have its own individual event proposal. If your group is co-sponsoring an event, the proposal should account for your organization's share and give the name of the co-sponsoring organization (both organizations should match up).

· Individual event proposals must be as itemized as possible. The more detail you include, the better chance you will have to getting your entire event approved.

· Both the proposal cover sheet and individual event forms must be filled out completely and submitted together along with your group’s charter and by-laws, which can be stapled to the back of your group’s packet.

· On the cover sheet, each item of the checklist must be initialed – this serves as a reminder to you that everything has been included.

· Include updated contact persons for your organization – President and Treasurer at minimum – to ensure that you will be contacted along with all the other group leaders.

· General interest meetings will be funded up to $50. This includes those meetings held prior to the Budget Meeting of September 13. If you have already held a general interest meeting, you must still include it as an individual event in your proposal packet.

DURING THE MEETING

· Be on time for your appointment. Groups who are more than three minutes late for their scheduled presentation will be required to wait until all the other scheduled organizations have had a chance to present.

· Each organization will have ten minutes to present their budget and answer questions that the SBA Board may have. While the proposals must be as detailed as possible, be prepared to provide any additional information for each planned event.

· After all organizations have made their presentations, discussions will be restricted exclusively to the SBA Board.

AFTER THE MEETING

· Once you have an approved budget, please follow the funding request and reimbursement guidelines that are available on the SBA website, www.albanylawsba.wordpress.com (blank forms are available on the website as well).

· Another email will be sent out detailing when each group can expect to receive requested checks and reimbursements once they have been submitted.

· Requests for reimbursement must be submitted no later than two weeks after the event. After that period, you will not be compensated.

· All fundraised money must be deposited within two days of the fundraiser. These funds, whether in check of cash form, must be submitted in person and cannot be left in my mailbox. Email me (ysiganur@albanylaw.edu) to set up an appointment to deposit the funds.

The SBA strives to be attentive to the entire student body. Many of you expressed the need to eliminate SBA emails that cloud our in-boxes. My response was the creation of this blog. As you have probably seen today, the SBA decided to create their own blog allowing a school wide elimination of emails. Please read below:

Due to high demand from the student body regarding the elimination of Student Organization e-mails, beginning Monday August 31st, the Student Bar Association will provide all information about student events on our brand new SBA Blog at http://albanylawsba.wordpress.com/

Additionally, event notifications will also be posted on the new television screens around the school. The SBA believes that these two new features offer an exciting alternative to the traditional event e-mails of the past that have drawn complaints. We ask that you visit the Blog - Daily, Weekly, Whenever you can and give it a fair chance for all Student Groups looking to get you involved.

The blog will include all notice of student events that were previously sent via e-mail as well as a calandar styled format of the events. You will also be able to find out about your student reps, the administration's policies and download all the paperwork you need to get your clubs and events started up and funded.

Annnnd we're back for a second year!

I hope all of you enjoyed your summers. Now its time to have a great second year of LAW SCHOOL!

Your SBA reps are planning a welcome back event this saturday after our first week of classes. It will be at the IRON GATE CAFE around 5:30pm (located at 182 Washington Avenue). Beers will be around $2.50 and they have a GREAT menu- food specials are in the works. More details to follow. The night will be a great way to catch up with your classmates.

What's to come this semester?

Traditionally the 2Ls plan the Halloween Party in October. I'm sure many of you went last year. You can expect this year's party to be scintillating.

In addition, we want your idea for events this semester: speakers, groups trips, contests, talent shows, fundraising, sport tournaments, movies, karaoke, bar nights . . . anything you can think of! Our goal is to find events that build camaraderie among not only our class but also all ALS students. In additional to stronger relationships between students, we will also strive to provide academically enriching programs.

Please email any one of us (or even respond to this post) and we will be sure to consider each and every idea. There is no firm schedule in place but soon enough we will have to present our final schedule of events at the SBA budget meeting. Once we get funding, we'll be ready to work just for YOU!

I want to urge anyone that will be here on the 14th to attend the Well Party. About 25% of the SBA's budget went to this party (that's roughly $20,000) so it should be quite the fiesta.

While the event is typically for 3Ls, because it was funded with SBA funds (OUR money), it is open to ALL ALS students. You are also welcome to bring family and friends.

We're back on "Open and Notorious" with this week's interview: an up close and exclusive with our fellow first year, Bob Barrows. Here we go...

Blog (ALS): Open ended question: what do you want the world to know about Bob Barrows?

Bob Barrows (BB): Well , my name is Bob Barrows. Although you may not see it at first, but oh baby that name packs a lot of punch! It's alliterative and my first name is a palindrome. Wikipedia provides a solid page on what that means if you don't know. As you can probably tell from my photo, I have awesome vision. Last but not least, since we all have one, my favorite political theorist/commentator is William F. Buckley.

ALS: I like the palindrome. If I were you, I'd go by the NOTORIOUS B.O.B. But that's neither here nor there. Next question: what's the best thing about albany? What's the worst?

BB: I'd probably say the best part of Albany is its subway system. It's so easy to use and makes the city so accessible! The worst has to be those Fucillo car commercials that pollute my television set. He's the local Billy Mays (the guy who peddles might putty, orangleglo, and oxyclean).He seems to be overly excited about selling bad automobiles and feels the need to regularly share it with all in the capital district. My father once said, "If someone does not have a sense of shame, that's a bad thing." It's so applicable here.

ALS: I'm feeling crazy so I'll go ahead and get legal again: If you were a law, what law would you be?

BB: This one is from my home state, Massachusetts: "It is unlawful to give beer to hospital patients."

ALS: Wow, that'll help you pass the MA bar. What's your biggest achievement?

BB: Discovering the cure for Swine Flu.

ALS: Darn, I was hoping they'd postpone finals because of that. Last question: What's the best "worst" movie EVER

BB: This is a delicate issue for me because I believe there is nothing better than a well-made box office bomb. I'd probably have to go with the 1984 war epic "Red Dawn" about the then Soviet Union's invasion of....wait for it...Colorado! The story's heroes are a group of high school students ( featuring a young Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen) who resist the entire Soviet army through guerrilla warfare and call themselves "the Wolverines" after their high school football team. It's a compelling netflix. I am persuaded to check out a recent film called "Pterodactyl" which supposedly may take the cake when it comes to bad movies.

OPEN AND NOTORIOUS

"Open and Notorious" is Q & A session between the blog moderator and a member of the Class of 2011. Our hopes are to introduce as many members of the class (at least those that want to partake) in an effort to get to know everyone a little bit better.

Class of 2011, let me introduce you to the one and only

JARED BOURASSA

Jared believes in taking care of himself , a well balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if his face is a little puffy he'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. He can do 1000 now.

BLOG (ALS) : Hey Jared, tell us where you're originally from?

Jared Bourassa (JB): I was born in Western Mass. Berkshires.

ALS: Oh very nice, I hear they have an epic cheese plate at the Red Lion Inn. Lets get personal for a second: Jared, I see you in the gym a lot and your muscles are huge. Why?

JB: To quote "You can always look better. Be thinner." --Patrick

ALS: Interesting philosophy. Lets discuss music: What's your favorite band(s).

JB: Led Zeppelin, Metallica, GnR

ALS: I'm sure that gets you pumped up for a fine day at law school. On the subject of law school, lets get legal: If you were a law, what law would you be?

JB: I'd be "Drunk in public"

ALS: Ah yes, a McKinney's favorite. Jared, whats you best day EVER?

JB: Easy- 12/10/2007: Led Zeppelin reunion concert. Close second: Mid-May 2011. Graduation.

Well not really...but it's defintely important. SBA ELECTIONS ARE TOMORROW! The ballot box will be behind the cafeteria from 9am-4pm.

END OF YEAR PARTY!

Our end of the YEAR party will be after the property final on May 12th at 5:00 pm at Elda's On Lark.

The party will be very similar to last semester's party:
3 Hour Open Bar (mixed well, domestic beer, house wine)
Appetizers (focacia, garlic knots)
Dinner (Chicken, Salad, Pasta, etc)
...more menu details to follow

Tickets are $20 and will include all of the above. As an additional incentive, I have arranged some party sponsorships who are throwing in some free stuff. Everyone who buys a ticket will be given free entry into a raffle. Prizes include:

$20 gift Certification to eldas (5 to give away)
1 Week membership to Sun of a Beach Tanning on Madison Ave (10 to give away)

Oral Arguments Are Upon Us

As all of us finally approach the finish line for lawyering, our last obstacles are those highly anticipated oral arguments. For those that have already stepped up in front of the bench, let us know how it went. Advice from one student to the next never hurts (funny/ horror stories are always welcome).

Legacy Fund Success Update

Cha-ching....

We received some late gifts, and recalculated the total this morning, to announce a total of $4876, representing 65% of the students in attendance and 17% participation by your overall class. Of course, we'll continue to accept gifts and pledge payments between now and June 30, so your total may change. And, the Board will match!

TOTAL RAISED LAST NIGHT: $9,752!!!!

Interesting sidenote: 13 classmates gave at the Student Barrister level ($100 or more.) That represents nearly 30% of those in the room. Last year only 10% of those there made a leadership level gift.

Legacy Fund- A Success!

Thank you to the class of 2011 for raising almost $5000 tonight. That amount will be matched by the board of trustees bringing our total up to just below $10,000. What a start to our classes' senior gift.

Finals are approaching but I urge all of you to take a break tomorrow and visit the "Our Changing Families" Symposium taking place during the majority of the day.
